What I Do
I come from a family that builds things; engineers, machinists, and tradesmen. I wanted to make cool stuff. Car design was the plan until I looked at the odds. I pivoted to Industrial Design to have a wider skill set.
Funny enough, I ended up in cars anyway. I designed aftermarket parts for Audi, VW, and Porsche for a couple of years, then landed at Off Highway Van, where I ran CMF and design for their whole line of high-end custom Sprinter camper vans.
I still love cars, but the cooler hobby is Live Steam Model Railroading. I own several steam locomotives, and I travel around the country running them at different clubs. They run on actual coal and water, just like the full-size ones. Right now I'm building tank cars, and I'm hoping to rebuild one of the engines next.
Trains are just cool. Running a steam engine feels like it's alive under you. In another life I'd have been an engineer, though I'd probably have ended up designing anyway.
Life's too short for ugly things. Whenever I put pen to paper, that's what I think. But that doesn't mean I can just design pretty things; they have to function and be manufacturable. I want someone to be proud that they have what I designed.
